Dr. Taroh Matsuno and Dr. Daniel Sperling were chosen as the 2013 winners of the prestigious Blue Planet Prize, provided by the Asahi Glass foundation. Each winner receives 50 million yen.

At this event, they will present an invaluable update on state of climate research today. Dr. Matsuno will share his cutting-edge findings on the El Nino phenomenon - the warming of the Pacific Ocean sea surface due to greenhouse gases - which has been blamed for much of the recent weather upheaval. In contrast, Dr. Sperling is an expert on fuel, transportation, and technology.

Together, the speakers will provide an unusual opportunity to understand the issue of climate change across a broad range of issues: the role of technology; traditional and alternative fuels; whether the the planet is truly warming, and, if so, how fast; the role of global warming on freak weather events, and whether they are increasing; and Japan's vulnerability to a changing planet.

Dr. Sperling will elaborate on the troubling fact that the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere now exceeds 400 parts per million for the first time in human history. He will also talk about technology-driven solutions, since he has practical experience in designing new, low-carbon transportation systems, and has played a leading role in designing California's climate change and air pollution policies.

Finally, both speakers will address the role of 'Big Data' and the usage of computer modeling, involving the analysis of staggering amounts of information, and how this could provide more certainty in climate change research.

In an era of controversy and obfuscation regarding climate change, the chance to hear two such highly-regarded experts should not be missed.
