After the Nagano case, in which a man posted on YouTube a video of him drowning his own cat because it was "mendokusai" (bothersome), the lack of protection for domestic animals in Japan has suddenly emerged. In Japan, one of the biggest pet countries, there are 22,340,000 registered pets, much more than the under-15 years old population. However, pets are not protected from abuse, mistreatment, torture and murder.

Famous TV entertainer Aya Sugimoto has had enough. In her blog and through an association she founded, she has denounced the enormous delay with which Japan is taking up the issue.

In Japan, pets can be abandoned and killed without punishment. Although there is a law recently enacted, it is not enforced. According to Sugimoto, 170,000 dogs and animals are killed by poison gas to save costs.

Please come to the Club to hear about Japan's sluggishness in protecting animals, an issue of growing global importance.
